Adorning Your Aisle

Aisle markers first came about to mark off reserved pews in churches for the family. What started off as simple signage, transformed into ribbon and floral and can be an amazing ceremony detail – be it in a church, ballroom or outside!

I am a big believer that if you are going to include this detail into your wedding, you need to do it right and make it fabulous OR skip it and use the money towards something else. Aisle markers should not look like an afterthought; they should look like they were intended and that you put thought into the design. A beautiful aisle marker can turn a plain look into an astounding one.

CLINK guidelines to ensure aisle marker success:

*If you are in a place of worship, check to see what they allow/do not allow. Also, have your florist get the size of the pew so they can figure out how to affix the adornment to the pew. There are a lot of rules about what materials can be used to adhere décor to the pews. You can never go wrong with hanging the décor with gorgeous ribbon that enhances your wedding palette.

*Aisle markers can be reused at your reception to maximize your wedding budget! Poseys, pomanders or even free standing aisle markers can be moved as long as the design goes with your reception look. The other key is to ensure that guests do not see the transition in motion. We do not recommend assigning this task to friends/family. Have your florist stay through the ceremony and them move the items to the new location. The florist is the most qualified to handle this and can spruce them up if needed. You don’t want your guests getting dirty/sweaty having to help with your décor.

*Aisle markers can also turn into a beautiful petal or lavender toss. Have your favorite fresh floral or herb placed in paper cones and let guests toss them when you make your first walk down the aisle as husband and wife! Make sure guests know what to do, either have a matching instructions sign on the cone or assign the aisle seats to your friends that are in the know. Pick a heavier paper to make sure it is substantial and won’t spill, and pick a pattern that you love and don’t be afraid to use multiple looks!

*Placement of your aisle markers is crucial. While you don’t need to adorn every row, just doing the first aisle may look odd. Decide on what you can do on your budget and spread them out from the front of the space to the back.

*We are always getting requests for a “candlelit ceremony.” CLINKers agree there is nothing more romantic than getting married in a room full of candles; we also know that most ceremonies occur before the sun sets and the candle look will only work in a darkened room. If you have the right ceremony space, huge pillar candles in oversized glass vases running the length of the aisle is the definition of the candlelit look!
